MEMBER SPOTLIGHT – EMILY BROWN

We are incredibly proud of all of our LOOM members and love seeing all of their growth, personally and professionally. Emily Brown, who owns Emily Brown Law LLC, started with us in January and her growth and involvement in our community has been an incredible blessing.

Get to know Emily so you can admire her just as much as we do!

Fun fact: Emily took these photos here at LOOM!

Tell us about your background, family, and education.

I grew up in Shelby, NC. My husband, Chris McConville, and I moved to Rock Hill 15 years ago from Farmington, NM. I earned a chemistry degree from N.C. State and a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Previously, I worked as a police officer for the City of Rock Hill and as the Deputy County Attorney for York County. I enjoy most outdoor activities, especially running, hiking, and gardening.

What is your company and who are your customers?

I focus on real estate litigation and land use issues, which means I help people fix problems with their neighborhoods. These problems can include ownership disputes, easement conflicts, disputes between neighbors related to property use, or difficulty satisfying planning or zoning regulations. I also represent people in eminent domain, foreclosure, and eviction cases.

How did your company start?

When I worked for York County, I spent most of my time working on cases related to acquiring property of road and utility projects, zoning, and property tax issues. People often asked me questions about real estate problems, and I realized very few lawyers practice in this area. I enjoy real estate litigation and land use, so I decided to open a law firm focusing on those areas.

What do you do on a daily basis and why?

Every day is different, so the first thing I do is update my task list, which helps me focus and work efficiently. I could be meeting with clients, performing consultations, going to court, or any number of things, so I check my list first and refer to it throughout the day. Before I end work for the day, I update the list for the next day.

What’s your past life? What skills got you to where you are?

My background studying science and working as a police officer developed my analytical and communication skills. The two skill sets give me the ability to work through technical problems I often encounter and communicate with clients in ways they can understand.

What are some new customers you are targeting?

Many people find lawyers or law firms intimidating or inaccessible. My firm is designed to help individuals and small businesses solve their property disputes as efficiently as possible, so they can spend their time focusing on their families, work, and hobbies.

What are your goals?

Professionally, I want to build a law practice that provides excellent customer service and is accessible for small businesses and individuals. Personally, I want to finish another half-marathon (my 4th).

Hiking at Bryce Canyon!

Other than your work, what are you most passionate about?

My faith in Christ and my family.

Why did you initially come to LOOM?

I primarily work alone. I wanted an environment where I could meet with clients and work around other people sometimes. I really like the workspaces, friendliness, and art at LOOM.

How do you feel you have benefited or grown at LOOM?

I have connected with other small business owners and formed valuable relationships. As a new business owner and solopreneur, expanding my support system helps me learn and succeed. I’ve also received some excellent referrals and met some people who have skill sets that fill some needs for my business.
