Hello, my name is Laurie Turo-Butler and I am excited to kick off the year of the tiger by joining the LOOM team. A native to upstate New York, my husband, Shawn and I chose the Queen City as the ideal place to pursue new employment opportunities for second careers and better weather than the chilly northeast that we are accustomed to.  Last summer my husband retired from a 25-year career in law enforcement and we set out to explore the U.S. and test our limits. We sold our house and most of our belongings, packed our RV to embark on a cross country trip of a lifetime, we called it the “Living Our Why Tour.” The 3-month adventure covered 13,000 miles, both coasts, 24 states and included many National Parks and monuments. The trip concluded in Charlotte in late October, and we began the process of establishing new roots.

My husband had accepted a position with the Catawba Indian Nation in Rock Hill as their new Public Safety Director. Now it was my turn, and as luck would have it, my experience in working in the higher education field caught the attention of LOOM Owner, Jennifer Belk.

Over the years, I have held a variety of different positions with a specialty in administrative and office managing skills. I have worked as the executive assistant to an elected government official, a Civil Service Commissioner, and most recently, the assistant to The Provost and Dean at Wells College, a small liberal arts college in the Fingerlakes region of Central New York. Additionally, I have enjoyed volunteering my time and efforts in many community-based projects and nationally recognized organizations such as Girl Scouts and the United Way. I’m looking forward to bringing my energy, talents, and can-do attitude to the LOOM Community and getting to know it’s members over the next couple of months.  I believe our Living Our Why tour didn’t really end, but continues here in the greater Charlotte area as we immerse ourselves into our new surroundings, cultivate new relationships and find our purpose.
